Whether you're fully plant-based or looking to add more veggies and plant proteins to your diet, IU Dining makes it easy to eat well. The best part is, the wide range of tasty vegan and vegetarian meals at campus dining halls, eateries, and restaurants are all included in your meal plan. Here are some of our dietitians' favorites.
Insider guide: vegan & vegetarian options on campus
Breakfast & brunch
It's breakfast until noon at Scratch Cafe in McNutt and Forest and at Scratch Table in Wright where the coffee is hot, the plant-based milk is cold, and the berries are fresh. Please note that berries go fast, so come early!
Daily vegan breakfast staples at these locations include:
- Hot oatmeal with fruit and/or granola
- Breakfast potatoes
- Bagels with jam
- Cereal with plant-based milk
- Fresh fruit and a variety of toppings and sides
Vegetarian options include all the above, plus:
- Customizable yogurt parfait bar
- Scrambled eggs
- Pancakes and waffles
Swing by McNutt's Free From IX or the Worry Free stations at Forest and Wright for a refreshing vegan smoothie of the day (flavors like Cherry Berry, Strawberry Banana, and Mixed Berry are student favorites).
At McNutt Free From IX, you'll find:
- Coconut-based yogurt with allergen-free granola
- Avocado toast
- Vegan hot cakes and French toast
IU Dietitian Lauren Bartholomew recommends vegan chia seed pudding or overnight oats with Uproot Oat Milk, topped with berries and granola for an extra boost of fiber and crunch. Find these yummies at the Worry Free location at Forest.
Lunch, snacks, & dinner
For a fresh and filling lunch, build a custom bowl at the Mediterranean Bar in McNutt or Forest, Worry Free at Wright, or mix it up with a veggie and rice stir fry from Spice Road.
Daily vegan options
- Create a vegan black bean tortilla (corn or flour) or build a bowl with yellow rice and toppings at Forest Caliente.
- Build a sandwich or wrap at The Clubhouse (located at Forest, McNutt, and Wright) or Union Street Market with veggies, hummus, and vegan chickpea salad.
- Craving something hearty? Try the Chipotle Black Bean Burger at Stone Grill (Forest, Wright, and McNutt). It's a satisfying combo of beans, rice, and veggies in burger form.
Vegetarian options include all the above, plus:
- Veggie supreme or cheese pizza from Slice at Forest, McNutt, and Wright or Union Street Market.
- Pasta bars across dining halls, where you can load up your plate with vegetables, chickpeas, and tofu for added nutrients.
When temperatures drop, head to the Potato Bar at Forest, McNutt, and Wright for a cozy plate of baked sweet potatoes or regular potatoes with steamed veggies—perfect as a side or a plant-based main.
No matter the time of day, Medley has you covered with a robust salad bar stocked with fresh toppings for your custom creation. Add variety and protein to your meal with options like chickpeas, cottage cheese, hummus, beans, quinoa, or tofu.
Need a burst of energy? Swing by Bookmarket Eatery for a fruit-and protein-packed smoothie from Blenz Bowls! Customize your toppings and stay cool while fueling up with plant-powered goodness.
