Student Responsibility

Student responsibility

Communication is key

IU Dining staff are here to nourish and fuel students to support their IU experience.

Admitted students should reach out to our dietitians as soon as possible to schedule a personal, one-on-one consultation at which you can share the details of your food allergies, sensitivities, and/or religious preferences. Be sure to share the information with your roommate, friends, and resident assistant once you’re on campus.

  • Learn the IU allergen icons used at our dining locations and in our online menus.
  • Have a prescription for an Epi-Pen? Always carry it with you.
  • If you are exhibiting symptoms of anaphylaxis, get help immediately. Administer your EpiPen or take an antihistamine and call 911. If you are on campus, stay where you are and notify a staff member. Make note of the day, time, and foods eaten.

Avoiding cross-contact

Cross-contact occurs when an allergen is inadvertently transferred from a food containing an allergen to a food that does not contain the ingredient. Self-serve dining spaces and shared fryers can cause cross-contamination. If you have any questions or concerns, please ask a staff member to:

  • Wash their hands and change gloves.
  • Use a new/clean utensil to serve your meal.
  • Serve your food directly from the kitchen.
  • Share which items were in the fryer.
