Impossible Chicken Tenders, made from plants, are now available at Union Street Market in Cedar Hall.
The tenders have 11 grams of protein per serving and can be ordered plain or with a bun and a variety of dipping sauces.
They have a lighter carbon footprint than animal chicken, using less water and land, and fewer GHG emissions. Impossible Chicken Tenders contain no cholesterol or animal antibiotics and have about 50% less saturated fat than standard animal chicken tenders which contain one gram of saturated fat per serving.
IU Chef Zak Kell said that at Bookmarket Eatery in Wells Library, a plant-based chicken tender from a different vendor is offered as an alternative to the 570 pounds per day of regular chicken tenders that are served there on average.
Each week, Bookmarket Eatery serves 3,000- to 4,000-pounds of animal chicken tenders. “Choosing a sustainable, plant-based alternative when you are able can contribute to less greenhouse gas emissions locally and for the planet," he said.
The tenders contain gluten and soy.
