Looking for vegetarian and vegan options on campus?
Here are some top picks from IU Registered Dietitians Rachel Dolgner and Lauren Trumbauer:
“I love getting a custom vegan tortilla (available at The Clubhouse at Bookmarket Eatery, McNutt, and Forest Dining Hall) and loading it up with hummus and fresh veggies. The Union Street Campus Store also has build-your-own deli sandwiches with plant-based proteins.” —Rachel
“The pasta bar at McNutt has delicious meatless meatballs and marinara. I like to add sauteed peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Mushrooms and onions are rich in prebiotics, which stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut and assist with digestion and metabolism while strengthening the immune system.” —Lauren
The Free From IX station at McNutt offers daily meals free from the nine major allergens: egg, fish, milk, peanut, sesame, soy, wheat, tree nuts, and shellfish. Protein-packed lentil penne and pasta sauce are offered at lunch and dinner. To increase the nutritional value, Rachel and Lauren suggest adding fresh spinach or other leafy greens to your dish.
Everything at the Worry Free concept at Forest is free of gluten, tree nut, peanut, fish, and shellfish. Try the corn- and rice-based pasta with veggies and tofu and prep them yourself at the sauté station.
In the mood for a meatless burger? Request a black bean burger from Stone Grill at Forest or a Beyond Burger from Whitfield Grill at the IMU or Free From IX at McNutt.
